14/05/2008 Zavvi - fighting the music biz slump
I kicked the habit of wasting time in Virgin Megastore many years ago – the big shops, such as Oxford Street and Champs Elysees, had a remarkably wide, deep stock, but it always seemed overpriced to me. But my main reason for not spending at Virgin was dislike of the brand’s values. Now that those values have gone, I’ve been drifting back to London's Oxford St branch of the cleverly re-branded Zavvi and – surprise, surprise – spending money there, too. The stock is still wide and deep. Pricing seems keener – The Complete On The Corner Sessions, the recent Miles Davis box set, was priced at around £45, when HMV were asking over £60. And there’s no sense of supporting an unwelcome brand any more. Until a few years ago, I used to spend in/recommend HMV and avoid Virgin. Now I spend in Zavvi and avoid HMV. If there are many more like me, Zavvi probably has a fighting chance in its fight to overcome the music biz slump. Gerry Smith
