13/05/2008 Dylan, Willie Nelson, Tony Bennett in free Columbia Legacy podcasts
If you haven’t yet caught up with them, the Columbia Legacy podcasts are worth investigating. Musicians for grown-ups covered in the series include Dylan, Willie Nelson, Tony Bennett, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley, as well as a host of lesser mortals. I know the Dylan series well. The 19 episodes, lasting for 5-10 minutes each, include snatches of great music, a narrator (mostly Patti Smith), and expert commentators. The content is intelligent and insightful. Back-to-back, they make a richly evocative documentary which lasts the duration of a long car ride. Willie Nelson also gets the treatment, with 18 short episodes, while Bennett, Cash and El are covered in a few episodes each. While the Columbia Legacy podcasts are promotional, you’d hardly guess from their tone. They’re free. And you can subscribe via iTunes, and receive future episodes automatically. Recommended.
