This Week’s Music for Grown-Ups on Radio/TV

Your exclusive listening/watching guide… thanks to compiler Mike Ollier:

RADIO For Grown-Ups

Mon BBCR2 19.00 ~ 20.00
* Paul Jones - A set by CJ Chenier is the highlight here.

Tues BBCR2 22.30 ~ 23.30
* Bill Hicks: The First Rock N Roll Comic - It's mostly comedy this week (see also TV listings) and this makes it by virtue of the title (!) and the fact that Hicks was savagely funny… comedy for grown-ups?

Weds BBCR4 11.00 ~ 11.30
* The GI Blues of Elvis Presley - Paul Gambaccini looks at El's two years in the army. Did you know that Colin Powell was stationed with him? I wonder if he was mis-pronouncing his first name even then?

Weds BBC2 23.00 ~ 23.30
* Earth Wind & Fire (1/4) - Funnyman Bill Bailey takes a wry look at tribute bands in this four-parter… I hope they feature my favourite, a North East band called… By Jordi!!

Thurs BBCR2 22.00 ~ 23.00
* Seven More Days That Rocked The World: The Death Of Kurt Cobain (1/7) - Well-worn and inessential seen/heard-it-all-before doc on Mr Love. No details of other events to be covered in future progs.

Fri BBCR6 21.00 ~ 22.00
* Theme Time Radio Hour with Bob Dylan: Laughter - The Maytals, Big Joe Turner and Gene Chandler are some of the artists featured in this week's aurally enlightened show.

Fri BBCR3 23.30 ~ 01.00
* Jazz On Three - A set from Pizza Express by saxophonist Chris Potter and his quartet. Send out for a takeaway 'hot n spicy' and complete the illusion you was there!

TV For Grown-Ups
Still nowt much to get excited about ~ mainly a couple of comedy shows based around music and some repeats.

Mon ITV2 20.00 ~ 20.30
* Amy Winehouse ~ Summer Sessions - Footage from a concert Amy DID turn up for… Somerset House. It got great reviews as well.

Mon BBC4 21.25 ~ 20.00
* In Concert ~ Ravi Shankar - Part of the BEEB's India/Pakistan series.

Thurs BBC2 21.30 ~ 22.00
* Saxondale - Steve Coogan's eponymous pest control officer/addled ex-roadie is back and helping out a Queen tribute band. Cheesy '70s rock soundtrack, a Mustang and bad hairdos, beards and pot bellies ~ what's not to like? Special mention too for superb co-star Ruth Jones as Tommy's put-upon other half (she also co-wrote/co-stars in BBC2's excellent Gavin & Stacey on Tuesday evening).

Fri BBC4 21.00 ~ 21.50
* BBC Session: Paul Simon - The diminutive one with a repeat from t'other side.

* Fri BBC4 21.50 ~ 22.40
Long John Baldry: In The Shadow Of The Blues - The tall one with a repeat from earlier this year.

BBC2 & BBC3 (the fact it's on 3 shows the audience being aimed for) is showing 'highlights' from Reading & Leeds festivals Fri/Sat ~ lots of cack like Razorlight etc but The Arcade Fire are promised, so it's VRs at the ready with fingers on FF.
