11/05/2007 Royal Opera House, 1947-2007
London’s Royal Opera House is my favourite gig. I’ve seen about 60 operas performed there in the last 15 years; ROH dominates my annual gig schedule, and Covent Garden productions are always contenders for my gig of the year. Its great operas celebrate the triumph of the human spirit. The House is a by-word for excellence. It wasn’t always thus, though: before my time, it had an unenviable reputation, an interminable history of feuds, failures and farragoes (as well as the occasional great historic production). The Royal Opera House of 2007 has much to celebrate. It should be shouting its own praises from the rooftops. But, a fine (if thin) souvenir issue of its glossy mag apart, there have been few signs of corks popping. Pity: if you’ve got it, flaunt it. And Covent Garden has it in spades. There’s nowhere on Earth I’d rather go for an evening of music for grown-ups. OK, maybe La Scala… . Gerry Smith
