08/05/2007 The Doors on DVD: six remarkable films
It’s well known that the advertising and PR surrounding new album releases, reissues and touring renews demand for the whole of a musician’s back catalogue, as s/he regains the limelight for a few months. Having already collected most recordings by most artists I like, I usually respond to the promo blitz not by buying, but by re-visiting - listening more carefully and filling gaps. So I didn’t buy the splendid new The Doors 2CD/DVD/book box, though I was almost persuaded, despite having had all the audio for ages. No, I spent a couple of weeks getting reacquainted with the legacy of The Doors, the premier US band of 1960s. And I bought a magnificent DVD set, The Doors Collector’s Edition a 3DVD box, comprising three outstanding films: Live In Europe 1968, No One Here Gets Out Alive documentary 1981 and Soundstage Performances. I bought it from www.cd-wow.com at a giveaway price - £10.75, delivered! I already had the equally magnificent The Doors - 30 Years Commemorative Edition DVD, which squeezes three different films onto a single disc: Live At The Hollywood Bowl, Dance On Fire, and The Soft Parade – A Retrospective. It’s widely available (eg at Fopp) for about £6. So you can buy all the Doors films you’ll ever need - six major programmes - for the princely sum of £16! Long live globalisation - and the decline of traditional music retailing!
