27/02/2007 Louis Armstrong for beginners
Jazz fans disappointed by BBC Radio 3’s dropping of one its best series, Jazz Legends - always a highlight of Fridays at 4pm in these parts – will be reassured by last week’s launch of an essential new series, Jazz Library, on Fridays at 10.30pm, ably hosted by Alyn Shipton. Last week’s opening programme covered Louis Armstrong, outlining his career and recommending his best work. This Friday, wisely avoiding a tedious chronological sequence, it focuses on contemporary Norwegian soprano saxman Jan Garbarek. This is inspired programming, providing an ideal primer for any grown-up trying to get into jazz, and for committed jazzbos filling gaps in their library. Count me in - I’m already a regular listener. Gerry Smith
