06/12/2006 Magnificent new Ella Fitzgerald sampler
Ella Fitzgerald fans – from newbie to experienced collector – will be snapping up the new double CD, The Very Best of the Song Books. It’s a well-constructed sampler of one of the most important recording projects in popular music, the releases that defined the canon of the Great American Songbook. And there’s remarkably little overlap with previous Song Book samplers – a mere five of the new release’s 32 tracks were included in the trio of mid-1990s Best Of The Song Book releases. Verve takes its curating of the Ella Fitzgerald treasure trove seriously. The legendary label remastered and re-released the great chanteuse’s glorious Song Book series of 13 LPs in the early 1990s as a 16CD box, and has been actively dicing, slicing and re-packaging it ever since - tastefully, and with all due reverence. The rest of the Fitzgerald/Verve canon is also carefully tended – Gold, the introductory double CD of a few years ago, is a classic sampler. And it’s occasionally discounted to £5. Blimey! Ella’s Song Books are a colossal achievement. The magnificent new Very Best Of is a must-buy for grown-up music fans.
