26/09/2006 The Byrds and Free reissues: why?
The Byrds’ catalogue, notably the Dylan covers, always gets a warm welcome here, and I’ve enjoyed the 4-disc box set ever since its release in the early days of CDs. But I just don’t get the new 4CD/1 dvd box set, There Is A Season. Why has it been released? Free, the poor man’s Led Zep, are c*ckrockers with a signature tune, All Right Now, now best remembered as the backing track for a TV ad. But I’d be stumped if I had to name more than a couple of other Free tunes. And I’ve had a perfectly adequate compilation, Completely Free, for about twenty years. Reissues can be very welcome, but I can’t get excited about this pair.
