25/09/2006 Magnificent Mozart – must-hear new CDs
Mozart’s opera music, notably from his “big four” works, Marriage Of Figaro, Cosi Fan Tutte, Don Giovanni and Magic Flute, ranks with the very best of the classical canon: it just doesn’t get any better. Deutsche Grammophon’s new autumn releases of a CD each of Mozart aria/duet recitals by Bryn Terfel (‘Tutto Mozart’ – what else), arguably the world’s most marketable male voice, and Anna Netrebko, currently being pushed as the world’s leading soprano (a bit prematurely, I’d venture) are, head and shoulders, the classical releases of the year. There are not many albums I'd buy before hearing a single note from them. For these two, I'd make an exception. They’re bound for critical and commercial success.
