20/09/2006 Prime Muddy Waters box - at a bargain price
Proper Records have been releasing outstanding budget box sets of material by the pre-rock greats – jazzers like Miles and Charlie Parker, country giants like Hank Williams, as well as early rock n rollers and bluesmen, for several years now. The boxes are issued in 4CD sets of material on which the copyright has lapsed, complemented by extensive booklets, beautiful packaging and a bargain price - normally about £13, but often discounted to £10. Tremendous products at tremendous, impulse buy prices. The new slim-line box design makes them even more inviting. My latest box is Muddy Waters - King Of The Chicago Blues. It covers early Muddy recordings, before his late-1950s breakthrough with Chess. Disc 1 has 10 of the famed Stovell’s Plantation recordings, dating from the informal sessions in the early 1940s when Muddy was discovered by Alan Lomax. The Lomax recordings alone are worth the purchase price: buy the Proper box and you’re getting the other three and a half CDs and a lovely little book, effectively free of charge! Masterful music. Delightful artefact. Keeeeeeeeeen price.
