13/09/2006 Tupac’s hip-hop legacy
Most grown-ups draw the line at rap and hip-hop – too negative, too nasty, not melodic enough. But Eminem – the acceptable face of hip-hop - may have changed more than a few minds. And it’s likely that, once distanced from its deeply unattractive socio-economic context, the genre will be seen to have produced some great musicians after all. A fine new appreciation in today’s Independent of Tupac, the “James Dean/Malcolm X/Martin Luther King” – take your pick – of hip-hop, who was gunned down ten years ago, makes a convincing case for the artist and his genre. Tupac’s already sold 70 million albums, so he’s closing in on Bob Dylan, for one. http//news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/article1523127.ece Gerry Smith
