Viva Roxy! Roxy Music re-discovered

I bought all eight Roxy Music albums on release. Loved the edgy art-rock which managed to find a mass market. Ferry’s vision. And voice. And writing. And the musicianship of Mackay, Manzanera et al.

The conventional wisdom of the time - that Roxy declined after Brian Eno left – is patent nonsense, but the first three albums, including Eno’s two, have always been my faves. Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure and Stranded still sound as fresh as they did 30 years ago.

Roxy taster compilations are ten a penny these days. The Best Of Roxy Music (2001) is a good overview, though its 18 tracks are bizarrely presented in reverse chronological order. It’s widely available in supermarkets for about £6.

But the best compilation has to be Roxy Music – The Early Years, which fillets the first 3 albums and adds the first two singles, Virginia Plain and Pyjamarama. Fopp are currently selling it for £5: staggeringly good value.

Viva Roxy!
