07/09/2006 A magnificent Mahler
Mahler’s magnificent 2nd Symphony (“Resurrection”), a complex, dark piece, filled the vast Royal Albert Hall last night as few symphonies can. It was the three-month season’s highlight. The BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Bernard Haitink, aided by the BBC Symphony Chorus and the London Symphony Chorus, played the resonant masterpiece with sufficient gravitas to leave you exhausted… awe-struck. The Proms season now drawing to an end in London hasn’t engaged me as much as some earlier years. The Shostakovich theme has opened doors, but little else has compelled me to either attend the gigs or listen to the broadcasts.
