06/09/2006 The Buddy Holly story on Radio 2
The world is slowly realising that rock ‘n’ roll was far more than Elvis Presley. More and more people are gradually catching on that there were a handful of other influential 1950s rockers, with the Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly leading the pack. After its rich, insightful two-part documentary on the Everly Brothers last Easter, BBC Radio 2 returned to the Fifties fray last night with the first hour of a splendid two-parter on Buddy Holly, including rarely heard recordings of interviews with the singer. I don’t have details to hand, but I’d bet the eagerly–awaited second part airs next Tuesday at 2030 BST. You can hear the programmes for a week after broadcast via the Radio 2 website. Ninety per cent of Radio 2’s output consists of drosspop for the bored aged, balm for the aesthetically infirm, but let’s be fair - they do broadcast a few stunning documentaries. This is one of them.
