20/06/2006 Half of The Who - live in Leeds again
News of the surviving half of The Who’s reunion gig at Leeds University evoked mixed emotions here in Music for Grown-Ups Land. Fondness at the memory of Live At Leeds, the great album the band recorded at the college in 1970, and at the multiple pleasures of their studio masterpieces, My Generation (1965) and Who’s Next? (1971). And respect that Pete Townshend has written new material for their forthcoming world tour. Townshend was a virtuoso axeman – Miles Davis said so – and probably still is. But also doubts - principally that The Who survivors might be too tempted to revisit the 1960s overmuch. I prefer my Who neat, in the original versions. With so many great musicians still to discover, and so little time, recycled heritage rock is a low priority in these parts. Gerry Smith
