24/02/2006 Rolling Stones classic collectable photographs
Like Dylan’s and Miles Davis’, the Rolling Stones’ “people” chose the photographers to document the band’s progress with care (or maybe they were just lucky?). Iconic images of all three seminal acts were captured for posterity. A must-have new collection of pics, The Rolling Stones – Classic, Rare & Unseen, has just been published in the intermittently essential Q Classic – the Ultimate Collectors Edition series. The front cover of the mag is the iconic monochrome Gered Mankowitz shot which graced the original (UK) release of Out Of Our Heads, and later the messy US compilation, December’s Children. Inside Q Classic, the collection gets better and better – 150+ photos documenting the larger-than-life times of the Stones, up to a shot from the Hollywood Bowl gig of November 2005. Alongside work by photographers you’d hope to see, such as Jerry Schatzberg and Jim Marshall, there are dozens of previously unseen photos by snappers you’ve probably never heard of. A vital acquisition for all Stones collectors.
