15/02/2006 Jim Moray: folk music for grown-ups
The third instalment of BBC Four’s short series, Folk Britannia, to be broadcast on Friday, will give a rare glimpse of one of the most exciting talents in contemporary music, Jim Moray. Moray takes trad songs and imbues them with a modern sensibility, partly by fusing in electronic instrumentation. His 2003 debut album, Sweet England, with its starkly modern versions of heritage tunes like Early One Morning, is one of the great albums of the Noughties decade. His one-man show in a tiny venue in Kent was my favourite gig of 2005. Moray’s eponymous second album is scheduled for release on 1 May, preceded by an exclusive download track, My Sweet Rose, available from 6 March through his website. He’s also doing a short tour: Bristol (7th March) Catch this man – he’s a special talent. Gerry Smith
