13/02/2006 Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan at the Crossroads
Thanks to James Ketchell for his review of Greil Marcus’s book, Like A Rolling Stone: “I finally got round to reading Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan at the Crossroads, published last year, in which Greil Marcus tackles perhaps the greatest song ever written. “Marcus frames the creation and impact of the song in a social, political and musical context, all important for the many legions of Dylan fans who were not around when the song was originally unleashed over the airwaves. Many of these 'young' Dylan fans know that it's a revolutionary, ground-breaking song, but have never wholly understood why. This book presents the complete picture. “For the most obsessive Dylan fan, there may not be enough new insight to merit a reading, however Marcus' nuggets of information (does anyone remember Bob Marley's song based on Like a Rolling Stone?) and excellent writing style will keep most amateur Dylanologists turning the pages. For the grown-up music fan this book is a timely reminder of the beauty of this song which, forty years later, has lost none of its original power. “If there is a criticism, it's that Marcus can occasionally veer off on a tangent, perhaps reading too much into certain aspects of the song. In the main, however, he paints a vivid, colourful and interesting picture of the recording of this monumental song and of the decade which influenced it. “The book is beautifully produced, with a stunning cover and a colour reproduction of a comic-book representation of the song on the inside. The smaller, square format of the book will make it stand out on your shelf and Marcus's writing will stand out in your mind, just as the song stood out on the radio all those years ago, and continues to do so today. “Wholly recommended for the Dylan fan, music fan and even the historian of the 1960s.”
