27/07/2005 New ‘Round About Midnight - Miles Davis legacy in safe hands
Sony continue to impress with their handling of the magnificent Miles Davis back catalogue. The latest release in the Legacy Edition series is a new version of the astounding ‘Round About Midnight (1956), one of the early recordings Davis made with the first great quintet, and his first Columbia disc after leaving Prestige. Like the previous re-release of ‘Round About Midnight (the 75th Anniversary Edition, also taken from the Miles/Coltrane box), the new package has 4 bonus tracks. But the must-buy clincher is the second CD, a previously unissued 30 minute concert version of the album material. Recorded in February 1956, it’s the first ever commercially available live performance by the quintet. A new 24 page booklet completes a highly recommended release.
