08/06/2005 Montreux 2005 – top European music festival
If you could attend just one summer music festival, anywhere in the world, Montreux, on the Swiss shore of Lake Geneva, looking across to the French Alps, would have to be a leading contender. For four decades, the jazz line-up and the parallel poprock festival have been setting the agenda in music for grown-ups. A couple of years ago, the rockpop programme looked as if it had been finalised in Grown-Up Heaven: * Sunday - Bob Dylan * Tuesday - Neil Young. No kidding! And the jazz programme was just as impressive. This year’s Montreux Jazz Festival, the 39th, on 1-16 July, isn’t quite as stellar – that would be impossible - but you can catch loads of great musicians, including McCoy Tyner, Kraftwerk, Cassandra Wilson, BB King, and Marcus Miller. So, if you’re kicking your heels in Europe, waiting for the Marciac Festival in August, Montreux could be the place.
