27/01/2005 Jacqueline du Pre anniversary
Jacqueline du Pre, the virtuoso cellist who died in 1987, after being struck down in her prime by multiple sclerosis, would have celebrated her 60th birthday yesterday. Du Pre's key recording is the exquisite Cello Concerto in E Minor, by Edward Elgar. Recorded in 1965 with Sir John Barbirolli (the first of two versions she recorded), it showcases her passionate mastery of her instrument. Du Pre's recording of the Cello Concerto has a lasting emotional impact on most who hear it, including many who wouldn't normally listen to instrumental music. It's one of the best-loved recordings in the classical repertoire. BBC Radio 3 marked the anniversary last night with an appropriately reverential tribute, Celebrating Jackie, four and a half hours of programmes, centred round a live recording of the Elgar piece, and including interviews with du Pre's friends and associates. It was inspired programming, by a vibrant radio station. The Elgar Cello Concerto by Jacqueline du Pre (EMI, 1965) is required listening for grown-up music fans.
