11/01/2005 Frank Sinatra: the key early and later recordings, on Columbia and Reprise
Frank Sinatra recorded for three main record labels - Columbia, Capitol and Reprise. Most good judges regard the pinnacle as the Capitol recordings, when Sinatra laid down definitive versions of Broadway standards like Cole Porter's I've Got You Under My Skin, and pioneered the concept album, long before the '60s rockers, with themed collections like Come Fly With Me. But the earlier, Columbia, recordings (Nancy, Sweet Lorraine… ), when Sinatra was the first teen heart throb, are pretty good, too, and the later, Reprise, material (Strangers In The Night, Fly Me To The Moon..) also demonstrate why Sinatra is the benchmark pre-rock popular singer. Three superb double albums of this material are often available discounted at very silly prices (£7 each): * Portrait Of Sinatra (Columbia Legacy, 1997, 2CD) The two Reprise collections are more or less complementary. Great music. Great singer. Great prices. Gerry Smith
