05/01/2005 Opera buffs celebrate La Scala, La Fenice and the Wales Millennium Centre
European opera lovers are celebrating the recent reopening, after lengthy closures, of two of the world's finest opera houses, La Scala, in Milan, and Venice's La Fenice. La Scala has been modernised and refurbished, while La Fenice has been rebuilt after being damaged by fire. La Fenice has already started staging full operatic productions, and La Scala is due to follow in March. Nearer home, opera buffs are waiting with keen anticipation the staging in February of the first production by Welsh National Opera, the new resident company in the impressive Wales Millennium Centre, which opened its doors last month.
