20/10/2004 Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong Together
Ella and Louis Together, the new Fitzgerald/Armstrong compilation CD, is doing brisk business in the supermarkets, priced at under £10. It's clearly intended as a follow-up to the recent, wildly successful, solo Ella 2CD compilation, Gold. The arresting cover artwork suggests it’s a natural follow-up for buyers of the solo set. Ella and Louis Together is the most recent of several repackagings of the Ella/Louis material. There were three original Ella/Louis albums: Ella and Louis, Ella and Louis Again, and Porgy and Bess, recorded in the mid-50s. Previous compilations, all bundling different material from the sessons for these albums, include: The new compilation's 15 tracks duplicate a varying half of the tracks on the previous single disc compilations. If you don't already have this material, Ella and Louis Together is a must-buy. The Verve sessions which brought together two of the greatest voices of the 20thC was a landmark in popular music, even if some critics regard the recordings as very slightly underwhelming: some claim that the chemistry didn't quite happen - that the recordings are "only" the (very considerable) sum of their parts - 2 plus 2 made 4, not the 5 some had hoped for. Maybe. But these are intimate recordings, with two great vocals at the front of the mix. Highly recommended.
