15/10/2004 The Copper Family - authentic folk musicians
Though Music for Grown-Ups covers the best from all all genres, we don’t allocate much space to folk music, whether it's English, Irish or American. It's not really to my taste - too much of it sounds like bogus nostalgia - senseless yearning for a mythical Golden Age. But no column focussing on excellence could possibly ignore musicians like the Copper Family, from Rottingdean, a village in the South Downs, near Brighton. For well over a century, successive generations of Coppers have kept alive the oral traditions of the farm labourers of Sussex. Unlike much English folk song, which emanates from the Industrial Revolution and recounts the evils of early capitalism, with an unconvincing veneer of DIY socialist idealism, the Coppers' repertoire is non-partisan. It concentrates on the eternal verities - birth, love, death, change, success, failure…. The ensemble, drawing together voices from several generations, sing powerful harmony, without accompaniment. Their music is an unalloyed delight. Tonight's new film, shown on the consistently impressive BBC4 TV channel, was a fitting tribute - analytical, evocative, and deeply moving. Copper Family: recommended music for grown-ups. An authentic source of rich, timeless music.
