Neil Young - new Greatest Hits album due

The gap at the heart of the Neil Young discography - no career-spanning best-of compilation - will be filled (well, almost) on November 15 by Reprise's (UK) release of Neil Young's Greatest Hits, a compilation of sixteen tracks:

* Down By The River, Cowgirl In The Sand, Cinnamon Girl (from Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, 1969);

* Helpless (from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young album, Déjà vu, 1970);

* After The Gold Rush, Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Southern Man (from After The Gold Rush, 1970);

* Ohio (single/and from Crosby, Still, Nash & Young album, So Far, 1974);

* The Needle And The Damage Done, Old Man, Heart Of Gold (from Harvest, 1972);

* Like A Hurricane (from American Stars 'n' Bars, 1977);

* Comes A Time (from Comes A Time album, 1978);

* Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black) (from Rust Never Sleeps, 1979);

* Rockin' In The Free World (from Freedom, 1989);

* Harvest Moon (from Harvest Moon, 1992 ).

Though the compilation is heavily skewed to Young's earlier material, it helps update the 35 track Decade, which covered the years 1966-1976. As it's limited to Reprise recordings, it omits anything from Young's controversial 1980s albums made for Geffen (which have been filleted for two other interesting compilation albums, Lucky Thirteen and - in Germany - Mystery Train).

Greatest Hits will be welcomed by casual Young fans, but, with only two songs included from the last quarter century, it gives a skewed view of Young's canon. Shakey is a vitally important contemporary musician, but you wouldn't guess from this compilation

Long a critic of the shortcomings of the CD format, Young is reportedly enthused that the disc is being released in a CD/"DVD-stereo" special edition, as well as CD format. Good news for audiophile fans.
