30/09/2004 De-Lovely: the Cole Porter Story
This weekend sees the release of De-Lovely: The Cole Porter Story in UK cinemas. It couldn't have a more compelling musician as a subject: Porter was one of the greatest songwriters of all time. His classic songs are part of the fabric of the 20th Century - 'Let's Do It' to 'I Get A Kick Out Of You', 'I Love Paris' to 'Just One Of Those Things', and 'Anything Goes' to 'Night And Day' have provided the soundscape for many millions of lives. Unlike most of his Broadway/Hollywood contemporaries, Porter wrote both words and music. Only Dylan challenges his primacy as top writer of the last century. And he led an, erm, interesting life. Ideal musical biopic subject, then? A must-see movie? Well, it seemed so - until the roster of singers on the soundtrack was revealed. Natalie Cole, Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, Alanis M, Robbie Williams… Hmm. Think I'd rather stay home and listen to the great Cole Porter songbook performed by the definitive interpreters - Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. That's music for grown-ups.
