24/09/2004 New Miles Davis box set: Complete Columbia Recordings, 1963-1964
Columbia Legacy are releasing Seven Steps: The Complete Columbia Recordings Of Miles Davis 1963-1964 next week ($110 on the Sony web site). Like the earlier boxes in the lavish Legacy series, it's a multi-disc set (7 CDs), with 50 recordings, including alternate takes. There's some remarkable music in the box. It documents a transitional phase in Davis's evolution - the first great quintet (Coltrane et al) had scattered, and the second (Hancock etc) was gradually being assembled. The under-rated tenor sax of George Coleman is heard on many of these tracks; he was eventually replaced by Wayne Shorter. Boxes already released in this highly-acclaimed series are: 1. The Complete Miles Davis With John Coltrane (1955-1961) 4. The Complete Studio Recordings Of The Miles Davis Quintet (1965-1968) So the new release, number 3 in the series, completes the set. Three other Miles boxes on Columbia - The Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel, The Columbia Years, and In Person (live at the Blackhawk) - are outside the numbered series. Columbia/Legacy have also announced that they are to cease production of the box sets in the deluxe metal spine format. The boxes are to be re-issued, with simpler packaging, as specially-priced editions. Even better news for Miles aficionados. The Columbia box sets are arguably the most impressive tribute to the legacy of any great musician.
