20/09/2004 Bruce Springsteen's Tunnel Of Love
Bernard McGuinn (England) writes: "I just got round to reading your review of Bruce Springsteen's The Rising. An excellent and, as usual, perceptive and provocative piece, in many respects. "I would, however, ask you to revisit the '80s Bruce albums that you've written off, and, in particular, take a fresh listen to Tunnel Of Love. I recently picked up this album on second-hand vinyl. I hadn't listened to it for at least a decade, and, clearly, it had never registered on my all-time greatest album list. "But the other night it just swept me away. It was almost a tearful moment: if it wasn't for the fact that I am a true tough Northerner, I may well have cried at the beauty and the depth of feeling in the writing, the music and, most tellingly, the vocal performance. "While not quite up there in the Blood on the Tracks bracket, Tunnel Of Love does give an insight into the problems inherent in grown-up relationships. "Give it another try: you won't be disappointed."
