17/09/2004 Cheb Khaled and Youssou N'Dour - strong new releases from African superstars
While poprock fans have little to celebrate, in a season of new releases dominated by reissues, world music buffs are lauding strong new releases from two African superstars - Cheb Khaled and Youssou N'Dour. Y-Rayi, the sixth album by Paris-based Algerian Cheb Khaled, is a strong response to those who wrote him off after some iffy middle-of-the-road recent work. While it doesn't match his 1992 masterpiece, Khaled, it comes highly recommended. Youssou N'Dour has been more consistent recently, leaving well behind memories of a sticky patch when his work, too, became too westernised. Egypt, his new album, is a disc suffused with contemplative Islam. The Senegalese's masterwork remains Immigres Earthworks, released 20 years ago. Grown-Ups seeking to refresh jaded musical palettes could do a lot worse than spending a couple of hours in the company of these two African master musicians. Gerry Smith
