15/09/2004 Dylan/ISIS book: feedback
Clifford Fry writes: G. Smith writes in his review of ISIS: "...Barker's claim that Dylan is 'unlike almost any other popular musician… in that his performance art changes nightly...' just doesn't tally with my own experience of gig-going. There are plenty of artists who, like Dylan, change the setlist and vary the performance every night." This comment seems to place importance on varying the set list, and I agree with that observation. But I think the thrust of the original comment is that from one tour to another the same actual song can be altered so much as to be almost unrecognizable to the casual listener. Dylan's various versions of some of even his "most popular" songs are unusual in my experience with live performance. Most artists do not alter the melody and rhythm of their songs in performance to the extent of Dylan from one tour to the next.
