Misjudgments: Happy Mondays

You can't tell a book by its cover. When the Madchester ravers, Happy Mondays, were at their peak, 15 years ago, you couldn't have paid me to listen to them. The publicity, with its constant theme of substance abuse, put me off. Presumably, that was its intention - define your audience by excluding those you don't want in it has always been sound marketing practice.

The PR stream having slowed to a trickle, it's time to re-assess the band. Oh boy. What a talented bunch. Shaun Ryder's incisive lyrics and expressive vocals make their best album, Pills N Thrills And Bellyaches (Factory, 1990), a must-listen. Maybe if their PR had focussed on the music, not the other stuff, they'd have reached a much bigger audience.

The Happy Mondays stand alongside The Stone Roses and Primal Scream as a trio of outstanding bands who successfully blended dance with rock.
