14/09/2004 Roy Orbison beats Elvis in new poll for top '50s rock n roller
Roy Orbison is the top '50s rock n roller, according to a new poll of visitors to the Music for Grown-Ups website. Orbison, best remembered for teen mini-operas like Running Scared and Dream Baby, was chosen by 26% of respondents, just ahead of Elvis Presley (24.6%) and Chuck Berry (21.9%). Buddy Holly was the choice of 17.8% of voters and 9.5% chose the Everly Brothers. It's a very surprising result. I'd have put Orbison last in this company. His powerful tenor is one of the most memorable voices in pop music, but his legacy hasn't aged as well as that of the other rockers in the poll - mainly because the lyrics of his big songs don't stand up to critical scrutiny as well as those of the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly and, especially, Chuck Berry. Full details: please click on Past Polls at the bottom of the left side margin of this site's Home Page for full details of this and all earlier Music for Grown-Ups polls. Gerry Smith
