Anna Netrebko - tonight

Russian soprano Anna Netrebko, the fastest rising star in the opera firmament, strutted her stuff beautifully in tonight's Prom, the last proper concert of the 2004 season. Backed by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Ms Netrebko performed a varied trio of arias:

 Puccini - Musetta's Waltz, from La Boheme
 Dvorak - Song to the Moon, from Rusalka
 Bellini - Mad Scene, from I Puritani

Netrebko's staggeringly beautiful (if small) voice was matched by her ability to inhabit three such contrasting roles in 20 minutes with such conviction. Her command of the bel canto gymnastics in the Bellini piece will linger long in the memory.

The concert, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and BBC 4 TV, will be up on the Radio 3 web site for a few days.

Gerry Smith
