26/08/2004 Black Music Awards
The MOBO (Music Of Black Origin) Awards are gradually becoming established as an essential part of the Brit music calendar. This year's nominations include a handful of favourites of this web site - agenda-setting hip-hoppers Jay-Z and Outkast, and ground-breaking world artists Youssou N'Dour and Angela Kidjo. Few other nominations ring bells in these parts - neither the coffee-coloured young women in the RnB niche, nor the young white hopefuls in the crooners category (labelled by MOBO, mysteriously, as "jazz") offer little to this grown-up music lover. Black origin music, it's clear, contains quality output, and pap, just like the musics of any other racial grouping. The awards will be presented at the Albert Hall in September.
