The Stone Roses: a definitive new DVD

The Stone Roses' eponymous first album is one of the strongest debuts in poprock history. Maybe the strongest. Acute writing and outstanding performances, notably from singer Ian Brown and lead guitar John Squire, make the 1989 album one of the finest ever recorded, in any period. Many Brits under 40 rate it as superior to anything produced by the Beatles. Songs like I Wanna Be Adored and Waterfall are among the most memorable pop songs of the last fifty years.

The Roses didn't produce much more. The immodestly entitled Second Coming, released after a considerable delay, on a different label, failed to match the debut's impact, though it has been steadily building critical respect ever since its launch.

Debut label Silvertone, with only the studio tracks for the first album, and a handful of singles, have released some exemplary repackages to satisfy the continuing demand for Roses material, most notably with The Complete Stone Roses CD.

Their most recent - inspired - release is The Stone Roses: The DVD, a two disc set which will delight the converted, and help develop the band's reputation among a younger group, and those grown-ups who missed them first time round.

Disc 1 combines the famous Blackpool gig with half a dozen videos. The second disc pulls together seven rare live TV perfromances, and three worthwhile "extras" - a TV feature from Rapido, an interview with Brown and Squire, and some "home video" footage which looks as if it comes from the London studio as the first album was being mixed. The packaging, replicating the familiar artwork of the debut album, is exquisite: you just want to keep picking it up and examining it.

While it can't replace the first Stone Roses album, the new DVD runs it mighty close. Credit to Silvertone for a magnificent release. At under £15 in UK supermarkets, this is a must-buy release.
