09/08/2004 New: Mozart Arias, by Thomas Allen
English opera singers who can cut it on the world stage are pretty rare. Baritone Simon Keenlyside is one who looks as if he will win an international following. He's following the path blazed by fellow baritone Thomas Allen, a Covent Garden favourite for decades, and one of Music for Grown-Ups' favourite voices. But, for such a renowned performer, Allen has made remarkably few recordings. His new Mozart Opera Arias, a reissue of a 1984 recital, is therefore doubly welcome, especially as it's on EMI's budget Classics for Pleasure label. It has a nice selection of arias, from the three Da Ponte operas, as well as extracts from Magic Flute and lesser-known Mozza operas Zaide, Lucio Silla, Tito, and Mitridate. Recommended.
