29/07/2004 Neil Young's Greendale now on DVD
Neil Young's Greendale was released on DVD in North America this week. The disc has the Greendale feature film, with music by Young and Crazy Horse, plus the accompanying documentary, The Making of Greendale, including interviews with Young, a live performance of Be the Rain, lyrics, and a complete Neil Young discography. The DVD is the latest product to emerge from the extensive Greendale project which has already seen the music CD, live acoustic and electric concerts in Europe and North America, a US cinema release, DVD of the solo acoustic performance of Greendale in Dublin, and Inside Greendale, DVD footage of Young and Crazy Horse recording the CD. A coffee table book is planned for later this year. Track list: Falling from above Whatever you think of the Greendale project - I'm unconvinced; I found the acoustic set tedious, and have listened to the album twice - its execution and commercialisation has been deeply impressive, an exemplar of abundant creativity. But while Neil Young, one of only a handful of rockers making music for grown-ups, is a particular favourite of this web site, the unconvincing ideologue seen in Greendale is not. The new release cements Neil Young's reputation as the most visually aware of musicians - the new DVD joins a catalogue of video product with no equal in rockpop. Shakey clearly likes to be seen as well as heard. Gerry Smith
