Bob Dylan books

Ron Wyly writes:

Here are some other Dylan books out there - not necessarily recent, but not on your list:

* Cott, Jonathan.
Dylan.
Garden City, NY: Dolphin/Doubleday, 1984.

* Humphries, Patrick & John Bauldie.
Absolutely Dylan.
New York: Viking Studio Books, 1991. (Originally published in Great Britain in 1991 as Oh No! Not Another Bob Dylan Book).

* Pickering, Stephen.
Bob Dylan Approximately - A Portrait of the Jewish Poet in Search of God: A Midrash.
New York: David McKay, 1975.

* Riley, Tim.
Hard Rain: A Dylan Commentary.
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1992.

* Scobie, Stephen.
Alias Bob Dylan.
Red Deer, Alberta: Red Deer College Press, 1991.

* Sounes, Howard.
Down the Highway: The Life of Bob Dylan.
New York: Grove Press, 2001.

Thanks to Ron for the reminder. Humphries/Bauldie is out of print in these parts. Scobie has just gone into a second edition, and is a must-buy. Cott, Pickering and Riley I ain't seen for ages. Sounes I've avoided, even at giveaway prices (£3!): I don't really have time for biogs.

Do you know of/recommend any other Bob books not listed by Ron and my earlier article (Shelton..., 8 July)?

Which Dylan book is a must-read for a new fan? Please let me know: gerry@musicforgrownups.co.uk
As I'm interested in the music rather than the life, I'd nominate Gray 3, Ricks and Heylin's Behind Closed Doors.
