13/07/2004 Music DVD: The Who, Stone Roses
New releases of music on DVD continue to disappoint. The biggest recent rockpop releases have been Tommy, The Who "rock opera", and Stone Roses, a snapshot of the Manchester band who recorded one of the finest albums of the last quarter century (the album was also called Stone Roses). Neither release will trouble my wallet. Tommy is a dull movie with a soundtrack which has dated. Much of the Stone Roses DVD consists of a live show (Blackpool), but bootleg footage has long suggested that the band's live shows failed to re-capture the excellence of their recordings. Music for Grown-Ups would like to praise some music DVDs, but can find precious little to enthuse about. Readers with DVD recommendations are invited to share them with Daily Update (gerrysmith@musicforgrownups.co.uk). But the paucity of strong product makes it increasingly likely that music DVD is set to remain a minority, niche format.
