Music DVD: Dylan, Neil Young, Van Morrison

Two more readers responded on the theme of music DVD. One with a strong review, the other with a wish list.

Peter Higginson thinks highly of the Mickey Jones (Bob Dylan) 1966 World Tour Home Movies:

"I never thought I'd say that a companion of Bob Dylan's could be as interesting as he is, but Mickey Jones is an extremely likeable and accomplished artist. He was a sought-after drummer who became a significant film heavy and his judgements are the product of experience and good taste.

"The film sequences themselves in the new DVD are shaky and offer only occasional insights into Dylan's performance and personality - they are, rather, contextual and locational 'atmosphere' sequences.

"But occasionally one glimpses a moment of Dylan as a human being - at Hamlet's Castle, for instance, or as the on-stage genius we know from the 1966 Albert Hall bootleg.

"Jones talks us through the strips of film with enjoyable bonhomie and, though this video is as much about him as Bob, he is insightful about Dylan's ordinary human side whilst expressing his respect for him as a musician.

"I enjoyed it enormously, whilst feeling mildly cheated that there was little direct and extended Dylan material. However, as I say, Jones is a goldmine in himself and he has earned his right to play on his connection with Bob. One or two of the colour sequences from Paris are like something from a jewellery box.

Star rating 3(/5)".

Meanwhile, reader Arthur Fife shares his DVD wish list:

"Looking for good music DVDs? How about a couple of (Dr.) Dylan for starters? Yes, I know these don't exist, but why not? What about The Anniversary Concert, Madison Square Gardens, 1992, if only for Neil Young's Watchtower? And how about Budokan? Not everyone's cup of tea, but how can you do without 'I Want You'?

"Normally, I would ask for a couple or three Van Morrison shows - but whilst there are countless examples of good concerts from him, they can't be considered visual performances of the first magnitude. Headphones-and-eyes-shut music only, I'm afraid."

Is music DVD a big disappointment? Or are there riches awaiting discovery? If you have music DVD recommendations you'd like to share with other Music for Grown-Ups readers, please get in touch: editorial@musicforgrownups.co.uk
