03/06/2004 Waterboy Mike Scott's tribute to Van Morrison
Listeners familiar with the work of both musicians have long been aware of Waterboy Mike Scott's artistic debt to Van Morrison. But few will have realised just how much Scott respects Morrison, as revealed in the recent re-issue of the strongest Waterboys album, This Is The Sea (aka TITS). Not only does Scott include a second officially released version of Morrison's Sweet Thing on the new bonus CD, he also makes a point of paying generous tribute to Belfast's favourite son in the sleeve notes: he cites Astral Weeks as a major influence on This Is The Sea, explaining why, in some detail. The new Sweet Thing is a lovely live version from 1985. A studio version of Morrison's best song was included on Fisherman's Blues, but is spoilt by the insertion of an extract from the silly Beatles song, Blackbird. The Healing Has Begun, another top Morrison tune, is performed by Scott on Live Adventures of the Waterboys. Reviewing This Is The Sea for Music for Grown-Ups, regular writer Mike Ollier was lukewarm. Having already heard the tepid, overpriced re-issues of the first two Waterboys albums, I expected to concur. Not so. Having bought the new 2CD TITS (at the giveaway Virgin price of £7), I have to disagree. The bonus CD is a wonderful, er, bonus, and the extensive sleeve notes are revelatory. Highly recommended. www.mikescottwaterboys.com I've got front row seats for Reading Hexagon. See you there?
