02/06/2004 Miles Davis's small acoustic bands of the 1950s
Though my preferred Mile Davis period is fusion from the few years after In A Silent Way - the sublime Panthalassa has been enlivening car journeys for weeks now - I also revere the early acoustic, bebop-to-cool material. The early '50s Prestige material is well covered in the series of attractive digipak OJC re-issues, but you try finding a comprehensive compilation sampler. It's well-nigh impossible. So I was delighted to see that the quirky Fopp music-to-books retail chain is selling a curious new German compilation 2CD import for only £7. Miles Davis is a release in the extensive new Modern Jazz Archive series, from a welcome label new to me, Membran International Gmbh, based in Germany. Along with an impressive (if shakily translated) 20 page booklet outlining Miles's career, the magnificent 2CD set has 27 tracks, lasting 2 hours 24 minutes, taken from no fewer than eight Miles albums, from Dig to Collector's Items, Walkin' to Blue Haze. It would be difficult to compile a better selection of early '50s small acoustic band tracks than this. The ever-changing line-ups include Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver, Gerry Mulligan, Art Blakey and, er, Charlie Parker. Miles's playing ranges from the sublime to the simply celestial. Very accessible music. Highly recommended compilation. And great value. Modern Jazz Archive no 221945. And there are lots more very enticing titles in this and the companion Classic Jazz Archive series. Info: www.membran.net Gerry Smith
