21/05/2004 Dylan and Miles Davis anniversaries
I don't usually pay too much attention to anniversaries - way too sentimental. But next week is a bit special - Monday 24 May marks the 63rd birthday of Bob Dylan, and Wednesday 26 May is the 78th anniversary of Miles Davis's birth, in 1926. So why make an exception for these two? Well, simply because they are two iconic musicians for grown-ups: two of the half dozen greatest artists this site is dedicated to celebrating. As regular readers will be aware, few opportunities to write about Dylan or Miles are wasted here. Why are they great, iconic musicians? Because they have produced vast, outstanding bodies of work - you could listen to either's catalogue for a lifetime and still be learning on the day you expired. And they were the dominant pioneers of their musical genres. There are few pleasures to match listening to Dylan or Miles. Readers yet to be converted to either musician are recommended to buy the Dylan and Davis volumes in Sony's Essential… double CD series. They showcase representative samples of the shimmering legacies of these American icons, and are astonishingly good value. A single album recommendation? I'd say try Dylan's Highway 61, and Miles's In A Silent Way.
