07/05/2004 Joni Mitchell - recommendations
Following last week's post recounting of my discovery of Joni Mitchell as a major league jazz vocalist, reader Denis Filion kindly sent his recommendations for further listening: "It's never too late to discover an artist! You may discover more of Joni Mitchell, the jazz singer, on her very good jazz album, Both Sides Now (2000), which is far superior to similar albums by Rod Stewart and Bryan Ferry. "Maybe you would also appreciate very good jazz-oriented interpretations of Joni Mitchell's compositions. On the last Diana Krall album (the one with Elvis Costello), you'll find a good rendering of 'Black Crow'; and, on her Live In Paris, another great Joni Mitchell song, 'A Case Of You'. "I don't think you will find those songs dated in this setting, even if you don't like Ms Krall. Both tracks are proof that, with proper material, Diana Krall can be great! Holly Cole has also made a nice track out of 'River' on her Dark Dark Heart (1997) album. "And if you ever want to dig deeper into Mitchell's material, you have to give a good listen to Court and Spark (1974). Superior material, dynamic production. From my point of view, this album has aged a lot more gracefully than Blue."
