27/04/2004 Beatlemania - new on DVD
By Richard Smith
The dearth of quality concert footage from early 1960s Beatles gigs makes the recording of the Fabs' show from The Coliseum, Washington DC an even greater treasure. Manchester-based Granada TV had the foresight to despatch a crew on the same plane that took the Beatles to the States, and this is this best available footage (allegedly accessed from the first generation master tapes). Also to be found here are the band's first three performances as guests on the Ed Sullivan Show. Thankfully, the DVD fillets the best of the Beatles' live sets from the three shows. Anyone anxious to see the Ed Sullivan Shows from which these performances are sourced in their entirety, can acquire another recent DVD release, The Four Historic Ed Sullivan Shows. As always with the Fabs, the off-stage footage is as interesting as the on-stage performances. Their captivating personalities are given full rein - at times, the Beatles' backstage behaviour is similar to the fictional backstage characters depicted in A Hard Day's Night. The DVD contains a "Making Of The Documentary" extra, clocking in at just under an hour, with a commentary provided by director Albert Maysle.
