27/04/2004 Joni Mitchell - mea culpa
Joni Mitchell? Not really my cup of tea. I find it hard to listen to her over-indulgent West Coast '70s warbling. I used to love Blue but, boy, does it sound dated. So when Ms Mitchell announced her retirement recently, I ungraciously flagged my reaction on another web site: "Hallelujah". Then, last week, I heard Herbie Hancock's Gershwin's World, which has two Mitchell contributions - The Man I Love, and Summertime. I couldn't believe it at first. Such powerful yet poignant interpretations. To my immense surprise, I realised what much of the world has probably known for years - Mitchell is a jazz vocalist from the very top drawer. You can forget all the over-hyped new generation "jazz" singers (Krall, Jones, and a seemingly unstoppable flow of lesser talents) - Joni Mitchell is the real deal. Excited by the discovery, I'd be grateful if any fans would guide my further ascent out of the darkness by suggesting a playing order of Mitchell's jazz-inflected albums. I know she's made some jazz titles, but have little idea where to start. So, it wasn't Ms Mitchell or her voice I've been bridling at all these years. Merely her poprock material. Mea culpa.
