22/04/2004 John Mayall and White Boy Blues on BBC4 - Music TV for Grown-Ups
As discussed here many times, BBC4, the new(ish) TV channel available exclusively on Freeview, the digital terrestrial platform (ie you need a £60 set-top box, and to live in an area with decent reception), is rapidly establishing itself as a sister channel for this web site. Inspired programming from the best of opera, world, jazz, rock, and country gets several hours airtime every week, normally on Friday and Saturday evenings. Tomorrow night's schedule - with a blues theme - is typically attractive: 9pm: John Mayall - 70th Birthday Concert 10pm: John Mayall - The Godfather of British Blues (documentary) 11pm: Repeat of tonight's broadcast of Mike Figgis's film, Red, White and Blues, the one covering white boy blues from Britain, in Scorsese's The Blues series. Watch out for the Stones, Van the Man, Clapton, John Lee Hooker et al. John Mayall's Bluesbreakers is one of the seminal albums of the rock era (a must-try if you haven't already got it), but, that apart, I've long regarded John Mayall, revered by many as the most important missionary in 1960s Brit blues, as a difficult listen, and would rather hear the real thing, from Chicago. It'll be interesting to see how robust this prejudice proves when confronted by what, I'm sure, will be strong evidence to the contrary.
