07/04/2004 Louis Armstrong - the Hot Five and Hot Seven masterpieces
Louis Armstrong is perhaps best known for keeping the Beatles in their place in the 1960s (ie off the top of the pop singles charts) with sublime releases like Wonderful World and Hello Dolly. But his true significance as one of the great creative forces of the 20thC - certainly one of the century's top three musicians - is apparent on much earlier recordings, the magical small group sides he recorded in the 1920s. Louis Armstrong: The Complete Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings 4CD box, on the wonderful Columbia Legacy label, with 89 tracks, is a definitive document. Much of the content is also available on separate CDs from the same reissue project, Louis Armstrong: The Complete Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings vols 1-3. But the bargain of the millennium so far has to be the single CD compilation, Best of Louis Armstrong: The Complete Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings. I picked it up last weekend for £5! It's the aural equivalent of having your own Picasso hanging over the mantelpiece.
