06/04/2004 Cassandra Wilson - seriously talented
I finally got my hands on Glamoured, the recent release (Blue Note, 2003) by the seriously talented Cassandra Wilson. It's a delight. Aided by a quietly funky small band, Wilson applies her trademark smokey contralto to half a dozen of her own songs, which all sound as if they will quickly become familiar. But her strength is, as always, her uniquely revealing interpretation of an eclectic songbook. Here she covers classics by Sting, Willie Nelson, Muddy Waters and Abbey Lincoln, among others. Interesting to see in the sleeve notes that Ms Wilson has Van Morrison very early in her long "thank you" list (just before Bob Dylan, whose Lay Lady Lay is also covered on the album, and "Bob de Niro"). No reason given. There's no Van M material on the album, though she does thank the Exec Producer, one Bruce Lundvall, for letting her be herself again (a regular Morrison live rap in the 1990s, quoting Sly Stone/Billy Stewart). Cassandra Wilson has, of course, covered Van Morrison classics such as Crazy Love and Tupelo Honey on previous CDs. I'll be seeing her performing again soon - at London's Royal Festival Hall on 4 May. Hot ticket. Very exciting prospect. Gerry Smith
